The government is silencing scientists and targeting environmentalists to make sure that nothing gets in the way of tar sands development. The Minister of the Environment argued that climate change was debatable and the Minister of Natural Resources called scientific opposition to industry expansion ‘nonsense’. The Alberta government tried to prevent environmentalists from participating in a tar sands hearing. A federal spy agency met with energy firms to discuss threats from environmental groups.
In brief: Harper is fighting as hard as he can to stamp out any dissent.
While he funds oil industry propaganda and prevents journalists from asking questions, he is transforming Canada. The cost of the tar sands will not just be environmental destruction, but the degradation of free speech, research and accountable government.
This is a crisis of democracy. And this is why we resist.
Because our freedom and our future is worth more than oil-soaked cash.
